Extra Credit Blog

In Ms.Valliers composition class we’ve had a number of interesting topics, as a professor you were always teaching us to think outside of the box and know what is going on around the world.
The Anti-bullying presentations were my favorite thing we did in composition 2 class. I enjoyed it so much because the activities we participated in were with our class in a group form and I got to learn how bullying effected my classmates, when I never even considered that bullying was a part of their lives. Ali (the instructor) reminded everyone what bullying was she taught us operative ways to handle it. I learned the negative effects of how bullying can affect people. When we did the tape-line technique it was interesting because I got to find out more about my classmates. My favorite thing about that day was when we wrote notes to each other saying nice things about our classmates, because I not only got to find out that people like me but I also got to share my feelings to others in the class. I got to write down how much I appreciated my professor and I felt like I never would have got to tell her without that note. To make the day better Elisa brought pie!
I would also like to note that I really enjoyed the majors fair. I’m so glad Ms.Vallier emphasized us to go so much.  I talked to professors from the nursing classes and they helped me outline my prerequisites for the major. Once I talked to people in the health major I got advice from them, they also told me that I had to go meet with my academic advisor. Going to the fair made me realize that I need to keep my GPA higher because there is a lot of competition in my major. I brought a friend with me who was confused about his major and it helped him learn what he wants to do. I got emails for the people who are in charge of the major, so now I can contact any of them if needed. It was also a great incentive to go to the major’s fair with the extra credit points because more students attended and probably benefited. Lastly, I was on the video for the major’s fair which was pretty awesome.
Thank you so much for being the best teacher I’ve ever had Ms.Vallier.

2041 : Blog Four

In the year 2041 I wake up to my curtains on the window being slid open automatically pouring light into my eyes and forcing my lids to open some and techno music progressively growing louder, you’ve got to love the new alarm clock systems in 2041 they make waking up in the morning promising. I jump out of bed and go to into my shower, as I turn the water on too hot I let the water run down my head. The shower systems in 2041 are recycled rain water that go through a filtering system and heated up by solar panels. As I’m in the shower the automatic radio powers to life in the middle of the weather broadcast for today the anchor is explaining that it is going to be another scorching day outside with a high temperature of ninety four degrees… The weather has been getting increasingly worse to the pollution problem we had in 2011, even though we do not have a pollution problem anymore its effects still affect our weather. Once out of the shower I put my teeth cleansing retainer in my mouth which instantly sanitizes my teeth. I walk into the kitchen of my dorm room and the conventional oven has already prepared a toasted wheat bagel for me hot and ready to eat. After eating breakfast I take the two pills, a multivitamin that protects my immune system from any viruses or diseases and I also take Tyme a pill that makes me stay awake longer and require less hours of sleep. I grab my tablet and take the bus to school. Once arriving in my composition two class I start my classwork on my automatic tablet. We watch informal videos and use our personal computers/tablets during the entire class. After class I decide to go read “essentials of argument” the book is saved in my tablet and I walk to the lawn and sit in the grass in a designated “No insect part” of the grass. It’s great to not worry about bugs crawling on me while studying. I go into the student union to go get lunch and meet with the TOMS club. Afterwards I take a Segway from the student government (they are given for students to borrow during the day) and ride to my psychology class, the professor is absent today so instead there is a video recording of his lecture. Once out of class I go to the gym to work out the equipment burns calories ten times quicker than normal equipment so it’s rare to see overweight people anywhere. There is a robotic personal trainer at the gym that guides me to which workouts I should use. After class I take the bus back to my dorm in north lake village. I begin to work on math homework, it is hard at first but then I ask my computer to help me and the computer tutors me til I understand the math. I then become hungry but instead of eating I just take a sustenance pill to make me full, fill me with nutrients, and provide me with energy. I then video live talk with my family on my computer we are in all different places of the world but we are all communicating through the video. I lounge in my bed and ask my bed to go to chiropractor setting and it begins to relieve stress from my body. I then stay awake til the early hours of the morning typing my rogerian essay paper for composition two class.

Skunk Ape

Skunk ape? What is that ? Those were my thoughts when I first started Ms.Valliers homework assignment. Never have I heard the term "skunk ape" in my entire life! I thought to my self it must be a skunk and an ape combined? But that is such an odd combination. Was it an ape that had the stench of a skunk? Or a skunk looking thing that also looked like an ape? Even though I was clueless when I first started the homework assignment I still knew how to research something in our library and that was the main point of the assignment.
Anyways, The skunk ape is approximately seven feet tall , moves at 20-25 miles per hour, only seen in Florida. It is an old Florida local myth. According to my research it said that the skunk ape is named skunk ape because of it's powerful foul odor like a cross between a skunk, rotten eggs, and cow manure.
I appreciate the homework assignment that Ms.Vallier assigned because the purpose of the article was to learn how to use tools to assist our research.

My big five for life

My big five for life!

1.       Graduate college

2.       Make a difference on this planet

3.       Save someone’s life

4.       Start my dream job

5.       Donate my organs
Graduating college: is a huge goal of mine because it’s a challenging four years of academia. On my journey to complete this goal there will be hardships that I will have to overcome. Once I complete this goal I feel like I will reach my adulthood. Once I’ve reached my adulthood I will be able to accomplish anything I set my mind too.
Make a difference in this planet: Once I graduate college I want to join the Peace Corps and go overseas to go to a country and assist people in poverty. Joining the Peace Corps has always been a dream of mine. I have always helped people in need and volunteered service hours to help local soup kitchens. I feel that our world has a severe hunger issue; I want to be able to help feed hungry people.
Save someone’s life: I feel I can accomplish this goal either while I’m in the Peace Corps or working as a nurse in a hospital. Saving someone’s life is one of my goals because to be able to save someone before they die is an extreme accomplishment in my eyes.
Start my dream job: My dream job is to work at St.Judes children hospital as a nurse. It’s a big goal but I know I can reach it. I want to do this because being able to help children who have cancer would be an extremely fulfilling job.
Donate my organs: When I die I want almost all of my organs to be taken out of my body and donated to people who need them. I feel like once I die if I leave my organs for other people that I can still be helping people while I am dead.

Argument is EVERYWHERE

Care to argue about cigarettes ?

In the Newport cigarette advertisement that is attached in my blog with a link shows four young attractive adults on a sailboat smoking cigarettes. Cigarette companies would argue that there just using advertisements but to someone of knowledge of how cigarettes affect the body would say that this is false advertising. Cigarettes are known to cause a myriad of cancers, heart attacks, strokes & add to hundreds of deaths every year. The argument that can be made in this advertisement would be that usually people who smoke cigarettes would not be doing physical activities like sailing. The people in this ad appear to be extremely healthy when people who smoke as few as 5 cigarettes a day can reduce teens' lung function growth, so the chances that people who smoke can do physical activity is low. The models in this advertisement are also wearing fashionable clothes which give the allusion that if you smoke you can look awesome just like they do.

Some people look at this advertisement and believe that if they buy cigarettes they can fit in with groups of people and look trendy.

Carbon footprint

To support the fast paced life of the American teenager is a tricky business in the way that schedules are hard to keep up with. My father, Fred Barch, is the principal of one of the only green schools in south Florida, Pine jog elementary. He made”Time” and “Newsweek” Magazine with his efforts in reducing the schools ecological footprint. Solar panels on the roof of the school provide enough energy to power the school.  Acres and acres of hydroponic gardens, which the kids themselves plant and are grown organically. The cafeteria uses vegetables grown for making school lunches. With all this impact of my father’s school i thought my score would be amazing on this “Carbon footprint quiz”. It turns out I use way more resources then I thought I did. I use 5.2 planet earths, which makes my carbon footprint pretty deep. A carbon footprint by definition is standard measurement of a unit’s influence on its habitat based on consumption and pollution. It compares human demand with planet Earth's ecological capacity to regenerate. I use 23 global acres (23.5 tons of carbon dioxide) A global acre is the unit we use to measure the productivity of an average acre of land. One of the biggest reasons why I take up so much energy and resource is because I constantly eat out. When I am on the road and in a hurry to be somewhere I stop to get food that is quick and fills me up. I never once considered to do this until I took this survey and realized how much processed meats and foods that originate from foreign countries. Another reason my carbon footprint is so big is because my house is very large and requires lots of energy to provide air conditioning and uses a lot of energy to light the house. As we did with my old house we will soon be getting a solar panel built into our roof. I can reduce my carbon footprint by packing more lunches from home, if I do this I can but my meat from a local place and have it ready to go in a lunch box when I want it, not to mention saves me money and gas.
